Daley Middle School Bully Prevention Curriculum and Program

1) School designed anti-bullying curriculum: Each Allied Arts staff person teaches three bully prevention lessons to all students. Students receive a total of eighteen lessons over the course of the school year. The lessons include an introduction to bullying, sexual harassment, self esteem, violence prevention, cyber bullying, building friendships, learning positive ways to communicate, making good decisions, solving conflicts.
2) “Netiquette:” Our computer technology instructor teaches students on-line social skills and addresses issues of safety and behavior in November.
3) Partnership with Healthy Futures: Daley Middle School and healthy Futures have partnered up to launch our bully prevention program and curriculum. We launched our first presentation this year. See outline of presentation at the end of this document.
4) Deana’s Educational Theater: Students attend bully-prevention, gender themed productions acted out by members of Deana’s Educational Theater once per year in February. See outline of presentations at end of this document.
5) Parent Workshop: We provide a parent workshop about bullying and internet safety at Open House.
6) Bully Boxes: We have four bully boxes located throughout the building. Students leave notes in boxes seeking help if they are being bullied or to report bullying of other students.
7) Surveys: Students in three grade levels are surveyed anonymously in the middle of and at the end of the school year about bullying. These surveys provide us with feedback as to the effectiveness of our program and which areas of the building need tightening up. The survey results are shared with staff at the first-of-the-year orientation meeting.
8) Bully Prevention Celebration Week: We devote the week prior to April vacation to celebrate our anti-bully culture. Students send messages of gratitude to one another for help they received from one another. We post acts-of-kindness from staff and students in our first floor hallway. The Student Council selects a theme word and students are photographed spelling each letter of the word. We hold a celebration dance at all student lunches on the Friday before vacation.
